The Mama Fatuma Goodwill Children’s Home

“In the name of Allah, the most beneficent, the most merciful.”

The Mama Fatuma Goodwill Children’s home has been providing a safe, healthy, and loving environment for Kenya’s orphans and destitute children for more thirty years.  During this time Mama Fatuma has earned a reputation for excellence in Kenya and the whole of East Africa.  Since its humble beginnings Mama Fatuma has cared for hundreds of orphaned children with no where else to turn.  Mama Fatuma is located
in the heart of eastern Nairobi near the border of Eastleigh and the Mathare slum.  The children in the home’s care come from a variety of backgrounds; many are abandoned, abused, or orphaned by HIV/AIDS and other causes.  Mama Fatuma also cares for a number of refugee children referred by the Kenya Children’s Department.  Mama Fatuma ardently subscribes to and follows the principles established in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, The African Charter on the Welfare of Children, and the Kenya Children’s Act of 2001.

Mama Fatuma is supported almost entirely by the community.  Unfortunately these donations often come erratically and the home struggles to pay school fees for children who have not been sponsored. With your help, Mama Fatuma will be able to continue to provide Nairobi’s neglected children with food, shelter, education, medical care and support.

Mama Fatuma Hosts Free Medical Clinic

More than 50 people queued outside of Mama Fatuma’s new vocational training  building for a free medical clinic in which nearly 300 patients from the community were seen and treated on Saturday June 28th.  Two volunteer doctors examined patients and wrote prescriptions filled in a full pharmacy that was also set up on the premises.  The most common ailments included ringworm, intestinal worms and parasites, respiratory infections, micronutrient deficiencies, and malaria.  In addition, another clinician was in attendance training Mama Fatuma’s staff, and community members in first aid, including CPR. The event was well attended by members of the Mama Fatuma board of directors, friends and well wishers.  Photos of the event are now available on our photos page.

Fahad Abdallah Achieves Nearly Perfect Marks on His KCSE

Mama Fatuma’s Fahad Abdallah has graduated secondary school with nearly perfect marks on his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE- Kenya’s equivalent to the SAT or ACT).  Fahad would like to be a doctor some day, and is eligible to attend  university.  Please help Fahad Achieve his goals by making a donation, or contacting us if you can help.

Kenya Violence Presents Challenges for Home

Mama Fatuma is located less than one block from the Mathare slum, an area that was heavily affected by the post-election violence.  Fortunately, the home remained secure throughout the crisis, and none of our children or staff were placed in harm’s way.

Unfortunately, we are still feeling the effects of the post election violence.  Because many of the the nearby  secondary schools have been affected by the violence, and transit routes are not secure, we have had to find new schools for many of the children.  We have also been met  with considerable challenges procuring donations from our regular supporters in  the community, as many lives have been disrupted and people displaced.  Even stores have been short on supplies lately.

We have found ourselves having trouble paying for the basic needs of the children lately.  Several are out of school because we have been unable to secure adequate supplies.  Please help us by making a donation.
